Last.fm and other music profile pages

I don't know about everybody else, but Last.fm is an awesome thing to me. You can find new bands and types of music, see what you listen to in general, and find people who listen to what you like.

So post your last.fm, pandora, etc... profiles.

summer music update: latin piano jazz & blood-painted CD cases

I hope everyone's summer is going well-- mine definitely is. I've been hanging out at SU for May term, which has given me plenty of time to find awesome music and waste time lounging around at the radio office in our newly-obtained comfy couch. So, I thought I would let you guys about some of the awesomeness I've uncovered in the past few weeks.

We watched a film called The Buena Vista Social Club in my world music class, and afterwards, I looked up some of pianist Ruben Gonzalez's stuff, which is really, really cool Latin piano jazz. And, at the time that the album with this track was released, Gonzalez was almost eighty years old. Crazy. If you like this, definitely check out the Buena Vista Social Club album, in which Gonzalez played with several other amazing Cuban musicians.

Cumbanchero - Ruben Gonzales

Last summer, I became aware of the band Everything, Now! because someone requested "I Live in a Trailer Park" while I was DJing at KTXT. I really thought the song was cool and catchy and strange, but only recently did I look at any of their other stuff. They made a CD without a record label in 2007 entitled "Ugly Magic" which can only be bought directly from them on their website. Wikipedia tells me that they put together the packaging for the CD by hand and "and used their own blood to paint the CD case." So, I bought the CD, got it in the mail a couple of weeks ago, and gave it a listen. As for whether or not the cases are painted with blood... well, it was red and a tiny bit sticky... uh... well, the album is very good in any case.

the notorious backstreet boys station id...

I am getting a big kick out of the way our listener count drops to 0 immediately (and not for the first time) as soon as the first notes of Vickie's Backstreet Boys Station ID sound. We're not actually playing the Backstreet Boys! If you listen for, like, 2 more seconds, you will see that a creepy voice I will not identify here merely declaims, "SU RADIOOOO."

Anyway, the sudden drop might have just been due to me talking; who knows.

Seriously though, right now Sufjan is on. SU Radio does not support the Backstreet Boys whatsoever; I swear.

tmyk #2

So I stayed up all night last night writing a paper, and the show is reflecting that very much I believe.

Kaitlyn had another obligation today and couldn't join me for the show, which has just served to make me extremely nervous. At one point I said "thank you for listening" about 6 times in a row. I was doing alright for a while with the continuity of the songs... but then I took a sharp turn a little while ago from Chopin to Broadcast, then from Camille Dalmais to Blonde Redhead. I'm a little nervous about peoples' reactions to my odd musical route.

Actually I just gained another listener. I think as long as I keep playing some pretty music and refrain from speaking we'll be alright for the next thirty minutes of this thing.

We Reeeeeeeally need more bed music. So Kaitlyn's here now, yay!

a dj's haiku.

su radio
making 13 listeners
really quite happy

Oh, what a week to start!

So this week would have been busy enough for me without it being SU Radio's inaugural week, but I was so grateful for the chance to get started that nothing could have kept me away from procrastinating my hours away at the studio. I keep saying this but I really believe that being goofy and depriving myself of sleep into the wee hours there kept me sane.

It turns out I have perhaps an ounce of the oodles of natural radio talent and charisma I witnessed in Liz W., host of the "That's Depressing" News half hour every weekday morning, who sounds like she was pretty much born to be an NPR reporter, and Katy S. and Rob, who amaze me with their blatant comfort in front of the mics.

SU Radio moment of the week: the noise party Friday afternoon with Vickie, Josh, Jeff... I don't remember who else was there but I really wish I had had a camera. It was the most jubilant sight to see people jumping around the room with cow bells, maracas, and other percussive noisemaking instruments Josh brought in. Kaitlyn, Andrea and I walked in for a minute and Kaitlyn even recited this poem in Old English she has memorized from high school. It was insane. I think it will be a weekly event, which is exciting.

As expected, SAM, our broadcasting software, has been acting a little screwy, but hopefully these are glitches that will be smoothed out as we go.

The biggest issues have been figuring out how best to promote the station, what people want to hear, and setting up fair computer / music usage rules.

Listening to feedback has been so helpful. I hope more listeners will put in their two cents, and spread the word. And I hope we will get a ton more people to apply to be DJs next semester, now that we're an established entity (soon-to-be student organization too, we hope, hah).

And now I have to stop pretending my life revolves around SU Radio. Tune into Kaitlyn's and my show, The More You Know, this Tuesday from 2-4 p.m.
